“Why would you major in Spanish when you’re already fluent?” was the question that I most often heard when I would tell them my major in college.
I double majored in Spanish and Linguistics at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Just like anyone who is a native English speaker might study English in college, I studied Spanish. Because I grew up in Mexico, I was put in all the classes for the native speakers. It was absolutely glorious! I thoroughly enjoyed studying Spanish history, literature, and all the cultures associated with the language.
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. I’m about to get real nerdy here… it includes the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics. It also deals with sociolinguistics, dialectology, psycholinguistics, etc. Basically, anything that has to do with language is what I studied.
My plan was to either become a Spanish teacher, an interpreter in a hospital, or go to some far off land that doesn’t have a written language yet and write their language and translate the Bible into that new language. Who knows, maybe I’ll still get to do all these things?
I graduated in 2016 and started my first big girl job at an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) Center the next day. That wasn’t my initial plan but wow, God really knew what I needed for the next 3 years. What started out as a job that would put my husband through seminary, turned into the best job I could have ever asked for. I will have to write a whole other post for that. One thing that I learned that applies to what I do now is that any skill can be taught many, many different ways.
That is my mission: teach the language I love to everyone and anyone who wants to learn in any and every way possible. If you have a desire to learn, there is a place for you do to so here!
